We had a flyball tournament this past weekend. Our last one was in May and man that was a disaster. Sophie ran fine the first few races of the day and then something spooked her. My guess is a pass was too tight and she freaked out and became cautious. No matter the dog or handler running after her, she wanted nothing to do with it and jumped out of the lane. So we pulled her.
Ever since her collision with the schnauzer pup, she has been cautious when playing. I finally managed to get her into the vet for a chiro adjustment the week before the tournament. The vet has commented in the past that Sophie's pelvis moves out of place easily, we have built muscle and continue to try to do so around her pelvis (she has some muscular legs already). The vet thought that was probably why she was being cautious and also part of the reason she didn't want to play with Swyatt, she wasn't feeling 100%.
We discussed retirement for her but the vet thinks the lack of activity would be very bad for her and that she is in good physical shape, just needs adjustments more often as most sports dogs do.
Chiro adjustment complete and a week of rest, a new Sophie emerged. You could see it in her walk and stretch, she was loose and limber....I feel like such a bad mom for taking so long to get her to the chiro :-(
This weekend she ran well. She was passing with no problems and very excited. She is going for another chiro adjustment on Saturday and then another week of rest before the next tournament. Will make sure to keep her going regularly.
Sophie and Swyatt made out like bandits in the raffle: a new collar, bed, gift card and tons of toys! All proceeds went to the Marin Humane Society :-)
Swyatt had his first stay in a hotel room which I thought would be hard since he was going to be with a few new dogs and not tired. He met the new dogs calmly and was more interested in the room than them. He crated up with a little whining and scratching of the crate but then went to sleep until wake up at 5:45am.
He met lots of new people, played with our junior handlers and tolerated his extended crating periods like a champ.
I also had him work some: we did dead retrieves and tugging. He did great though puppy brain kicks in after a few mins so we need to work on his focus. We also had him stand near the box as it triggered and he merely looked at it and turned his head but was content to eat his cheese.
Overeall good weekend :-D
