We have had a very busy year and I am looking forward to 2016 and new adventures.
I always have a list of goals, I hope to accomplish but the overarching goal is always to have fun with the pups. While Sophie is a sports competitor and Swy is in training, they are always first and foremost spoiled family members. I try my best to ensure that they are happy and engaged while we strive to meet our yearly goals. But if they don't have fun or never compete, its not the end of the world and we will just re-evaluate plans and activities as we move forward :-)
Goals for Sophie
- earn her Onyx Flyball title. She needs 3,058 points to achieve this title. We have a very small team with a lot of young dogs close to ready to race. My goal is to get Sophie her Onyx and then move her to part time or back up as needed by the team. I am sure she would keep playing the sport forever if I let her but it is a physically taxing sport and I don't want her to get injured or over do it.
- compete in more barn hunt events and get her RATO title
- compete in Rally Novice event
- Swim more
Goals for Swyatt:
- learn to weave
- full runs in preflight or singles at Ufli event
- try out a USDAA Quarterly event
- try Novice at Barn Hunt event
- more hikes
Wishing everyone a safe and happy New Years Eve and 2016!
The title says it all! This is my blog about how two crazy labradors have changed my life forever! I hope to write a little about our adventures in flyball, agility, obedience and in general my life with Sophie and Swyatt :-)

revisiting our 2015 goals :-)
How is it almost November? This year has flown by! I figured now is a good time to look at our goals from the year as I start to plan next year's goals.
Goals for Sophie in 2015:
- Earn her FMCH (Flyball Master Champion) 15,000 points. She needs 1,152 points -Successfully accomplished in March! Wohoo!
- Earn her CGC - this has been on the horizon for numerous years. I always hesitated due to her leash reactivity but she has made amazing progress and I think we maybe ready --> Actually forgot this was on our list for this year...oops
- Finish her CAT title (Coursing Ability Title) - Accomplished! She definitely got the hang of it by her third leg and had a blast. We may do more events just because she really seems to like chasing the baggie lol
- Try out barn hunt - I think she will excel at this and as she gets older, I would like to start looking into events that are less taxing on her physically --> We have been taking classes since May and she loves it! We had our first trial a few weekends ago. No qs, but we had a lot of fun. Now just to work on generalizing and confidence in new settings.
Swyatt:
- Work on a solid stay - he has a good stay in his crate, usually waits to be released. But we need to
get him to hold that stay in other settings. Specifically at agility practice. --> Still a work in progress. But doing so much better!
- Work on recall in distractions - he goes off leash hiking with the daycare and does great. I am not quite ready to let him loose when we hike. --> Always going to be one of those things we work on but he has made great progress. We are no working off leash in agility class and flyball practice. He has been doing great recalling and working.
- Introduce wall work and have a swimmers turn on the box - a biggie because given his size, I want to train a clean, tight swimmers turn --> Since we have seen a lot of maturing and focus on his part, we have just begun this work this past weekend. At the beginning of practice he was slamming into the wall and really had no clue what we were asking and no idea he had back feet. By the end of practice (he is learning to work through things and think a lot) he was doing four feet on the wall turns with a quick snap off. His jumps were at about my shoulder height. It was awesome!
- side by side recalls - he has successfully done this a few times but we need to vary the dogs and practice it more Some days this goes really well....a few demos and practices where he rocked this. And then this past weekend, he successfully completed three runs and then chased the border collie in the neighboring lane. Work in progress!
- Progress with his leash reactivity - this is more on me in that we need more training scenarios. I will admit, I have somewhat shied away from this. We have done several hike a bull hikes and he does well at those. But I haven't been as proactive at getting him out on walks in urban settings and working on his reactivity. But its time to do so. I was reminded recently of the progress Sophie has made and now it is time to focus on Swyatt making progress! --> we took a reactive dog class and have seen progress. He still has his moments where he gets way over threshold but he is getting much better and is able to focus more on me or a task and work through his meltdowns.
- graduate to being loose in the house when we aren't home - his previous anxiety about being left isn't evident anymore, he can stay alone for short periods. But now it is working on him not counter surfing. Only if the counters are completely empty and nothing else in the vicinity looks interesting. He also must be tired LOL. Slow going for sure!
Both of my labbies have made amazing progress this year. I am so happy with their progress and the adventures we have had. I am excited to start planning our next year together and to see what we shall do :-)

End of the year
I did not draft any goals for 2014 with the addition of Swyatt to the household, the singular goal was just to find a new normal and keep everyone happy/healthy. I think we achieved that fairly well.
Sophie: My girl is 7 years old. Still as active as can be. Smart as can be and mischievous too. She has settled into her role as the older sibling quite well. She will chase Swyatt around the house but plays nicely and shares toys. She has come a long way in her leash reactivity. We navigated a very busy Pet Food Express for Santa photos with no reactivity. I couldn't be more pleased!
Goals for Sophie in 2015:
- Earn her FMCH (Flyball Master Champion) 15,000 points. She needs 1,152 points
- Earn her CGC - this has been on the horizon for numerous years. I always hesitated due to her leash reactivity but she has made amazing progress and I think we maybe ready
- Finish her CAT title (Coursing Ability Title) - needs one more leg
- Try out barn hunt - I think she will excel at this and as she gets older, I would like to start looking into events that are less taxing on her physically
Swyatt: Is approximately 2 and a powder keg of energy. He does have a very good off switch at home, provided he has enough exercise. He has come a long way in his dog social skills but still needs to work on remembering not all dogs enjoy a game of chase. I am happy with his progress in agility and his growing ability to focus at tasks.
- Work on a solid stay - he has a good stay in his crate, usually waits to be released. But we need to
get him to hold that stay in other settings. Specifically at agility practice.
- Work on recall in distractions - he goes off leash hiking with the daycare and does great. I am not quite ready to let him loose when we hike.

- graduate to being loose in the house when we aren't home - his previous anxiety about being left isn't evident anymore, he can stay alone for short periods. But now it is working on him not counter surfing.
The labbies are what keep me sane when work is crazy. I look forward to another busy and active year.
My personal goals:
- complete 365 project
- build my photography portfolio and take more classes
- make a budget and stick to it
- more exercise and hikes
- remember that the bad times will pass and stay positive
- be present and enjoy time with friends/family
Wishing everyone a happy new year!

Goals for 2013
I like lists...maybe its part of my slightly type A personality but lists make me happy. I don't overly worry about completing said lists but regardless I make them.
So that said this is the third year I will be making a goals list for Sophie and myself.
1) Earn at least one leg towards Rally Novice title - this has been on our list the last two years. Life has gotten in the way of us being consistent with training and classes. I am hopeful that this year will be different.
2) Earn her Canine Good Citizenship
3) Make some headway into the 3,032 points Sophie needs for her FMX title
4) Explore at least 3 new trails - Sophie enjoys hikes and the exercise is needed for me!
5) Run for the Seals 4mile run or 2 mile walk - dog friendly event in our area. I am aiming for the 4 mile run but at the very least I plan for us to join the walk
6) Complete Project 365
7) Complete Level 1 CPE title - this one might be a bit hard since I have yet to find us an agility class that fits our schedule so to that end...
8) Find an agility class that fits our schedule with an instructor we like
9) Participate in the Canine Walk for Cancer
10) Teach Sophie 3 new tricks (I am setting the bar low here and won't count rally commands)
And above all have fun with my rhino.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

End of 2012 already?!?!
Where have the last few months gone? I can't believe I have not updated our blog since October. The time just flies. Sophie is doing well and being her usual energetic bouncy silly self. She is my bright light in what has been a rough few months at work and personal life (which includes more flyball drama than I ever wanted to deal with :-P)
Since the year is almost up, I thought I would take a look at our 2012 Goal List before I start working our 2013 list (which will include being better about blogging and keeping up with my favorite blogs!)
1) Learn to pass dogs coming out of the lanes so Sophie can run multiple positions instead of only start dog: I think we can cross this one off the list and mark it a success. Sophie has been passing dogs as she enters the lanes since April and at last count she was at 7 different dogs. I am thrilled with how she is doing! She no longer runs start dog and instead runs 2nd or 3rd which given that she is a big black dog and we usually run outdoors in heat, not running start is a good thing for her!
2) Conquer the teeter: Success....she doesn't love the teeter but she will do it.
3) Visit Fort Funston while it is still an off leash beach as much as possible! Oops! We never made it to Fort Funston. In fact we only made it to the beach once this year. But she had a blast!
4) Earn Sophie's Flyball Master title (needed 1,528 points) Check! She earned her FM title in June at our club tournament.
5) Try out at least 3 new hiking trails CHECK! Thanks to Hike a Bulls we have tried out 4 new trails in the Bay Area. Looking forward to next year and more hikes!
6) Complete first leg of Rally Novice Title: We took a hiatus from training classes (obedience and agility) so no competing. Planning to restart classes in two weeks.
7)Take more pictures of Sophie and really just in general use my camera more: Check! My IG and facebook accounts have been inundated with Sophie photos though most were thanks to my iphone not my Nikon
8) in addition to #7, take a photography class this year at some point: next year!
9) Move to Level 2 CPE (I am not going to push this one, if it happens great, if not we have time): see #6, agility and obedience were on hold this year due to work and life complications. We need to find a class that fits our schedule and hopefully can resume agility next year
10) Complete the Couch to 5K program: oops forgot this was even on the list :-P
11) spruce up the blog!oops forgot this was even on the list :-P
12) learn to snowboard Looking forward to 2012 and whatever new adventures it may bring! Unfortunately I was unable to make it out to the snow this year....maybe next!

Half way through the year look at our goals
Oh so behind in updating and keeping up with blog friends.
But since we are more or less halfway through the year (where has the year gone!?!?) I figure I will go over our goals for the year and see how we are progressing: I have to say so far so good :-D
1) Learn to pass dogs coming out of the lanes so Sophie can run multiple positions instead of only start dog: Such progress on this front! We have successfully competed in a tournament with Sophie passing two different dogs! We need more work to learn releasing/timing etc but so proud of my girl.
2) Conquer the teeter: We have not had a refusal in a few months. She doesn't fly over it but she doesn't jump off either!
3) Visit Fort Funston while it is still an off leash beach as much as possible! Unfortunately have yet to go this year. Hopefully we can fix that this summer
4) Earn Sophie's Flyball Master title (needed 1,528 points) Hoping that this weekend we get the last 307 points!
5) Try out at least 3 new hiking trails Still need to explore 2 new trails!
6) Complete first leg of Rally Novice Title: Will be starting our first official rally class next weekend. Hoping to compete in our first Rally event in September.
7)Take more pictures of Sophie and really just in general use my camera more: I have used my iphone for photos...a lot. But still need to get my Nikon out and use it more often.
8) in addition to #7, take a photography class this year at some point: Still trying to fit this into the schedule!
9) Move to Level 2 CPE (I am not going to push this one, if it happens great, if not we have time): We still have a few of the strategy games to complete before we moved to Level 2. She could technically compete in Level 2 Standard and Jumpers but I want to finish up our full level 1 title first.
10) Complete the Couch to 5K program: oops forgot this was even on the list :-P
11) spruce up the blog!oops forgot this was even on the list :-P
12) learn to snowboard Looking forward to 2012 and whatever new adventures it may bring! Unfortunately I was unable to make it out to the snow earlier this year. Maybe later in the year.

One of my goals for this year is to complete the Couch to 5K program. My younger sister is in town visiting and is also working on the program. We decided to go for a workout yesterday and I decided to bring Sophie along.
I know Sophie is much faster than I am but she is usually content to walk quickly next to me as I try to run.
Not so much yesterday. She was doing a great job of walking briskly and leaving slack on her leash. Well at one point she got tired of our slow pace, turned her head and grabbed her leash in the middle. Then proceed to start to run and try to pull me along. There was no jumping like she used to do as a puppy when she wanted to play. It was a grab and pull as if to say "OMG hurry up already!"
My sister was a few feet ahead and we caught up to her with Sophie's technique. My sister and those around us were very entertained. I couldn't stop laughing. She finally slowed down when we caught up to my sister. Then she went back to a brisk walk.

Over halfway through the year
So now that we are over half way through the year, I wanted to review my goals for Sophie and myself and see where we stand:
1) Continue to work on Sophie's box turn We still have work to do. She does well with a prop in but once it comes out, I can only get a few clean turns before she forgets to lift her rear
2) Work on our starts so we are more consistent I am happy to report that for the most part we are doing pretty well with this one! Could use more work but so far so good
3) Learn to pass when a dog is coming out of the lanes Have not even tried this so far this year. We choose to focus on her starts and box turn. This will be our next hurdle.
4)Continue to work on leash reactivity and "Look at that" game Progress, she has had some great days/events with no reactivity and some days where its harder for her. But overall I am so pleased with our progress.
5) Take advantage of the hiking trails in our area and explore Not as much as I would like but we have enjoyed a few hiking trails in our area
6) Work on recall in high distraction areas like the beach eep, haven't worked on this in months!
7) Participate in the October walk for K9 Cancer have a month left to sign up!
8) conquer the teeter! work in progress!
9)earn first leg of rally novice title We are signing up for an APDT rally trial in October.
10) have fun! DEFINITELY!
I think we have done pretty well so far. I will be signing us up for our first Rally trial and hopefully our first CPE Agility Trial in Dec. Now that flyball season is winding down we have some more time to travel and train for other events.
I am nervous to try these new venues/events but also very excited!
